EDF Energy - Pole Replacement
Residents may have noticed that a number of electricity poles are being replaced
as they have decayed with age.
EDF notify residents in advance when they will
have their power cut off while the cables are being transferred to the new
poles, and whether access is necessary to their premises or meters when
reconnecting. They include such advice as setting fridges and freezers to their
lowest temperatures before the power is disconnected and not opening the doors
more than necessary.

Welcome to our Summer newsletter and to all new residents of
Badgers Mount – we hope to meet you all at our forthcoming Garden Party (details
below).
COMMITTEE NEWS
A good number of residents attended our recent AGM at which the existing
committee were re-elected for another year. Richard King also volunteered to
join the committee and was duly elected by those present. Our Committee now
comprises 10 members as follows:
Gordon Plumb (534279)
Tracey McCartney (534471)
Chris Lucas (534143)
Len Cottle (534304)
Myra Marshall (534745)
Mary Bliss (534278)
Zena Belton (534566)
Eric Raven (535171)
Liz Dallimore (535080)
Richard King (533979)
At the AGM the question of renaming the Orpington Bypass was raised again. To
gauge interest from those who will be affected, a slip is attached to this
newsletter. Please return completed slips to either Len Cottle (Marchwood,
Orpington Bypass) or the Memorial Hall letterbox (kitchen door facing the
Bypass) or by emailing us via our website.
Most residents will recall that in 2004 the committee transferred ownership and
insurance liability of the Millennium Sign to Shoreham Parish Council. Recent
discussions with the Council regarding the deterioration of the sign has
resulted in their decision to provide a replacement in the near future. This
will be very similar to the current sign but only the Spring picture being used
on both faces.
SOCIAL EVENTS
SUMMER GARDEN PARTY
Saturday, 10th July 2010
A Summer Garden Party will once again be held between 2 and 6 pm at Oaklea,
Highland Road by the kind invitation of Dr. Mary Bliss. Oaklea is located off
the track from Badgers Road into the woods. Additional signs to the party will
start at the top of Badgers Road. However, if you are unsure please contact us
or check out the ‘House Locator’ page on our
website. Tea, coffee, soft drinks, cakes, biscuits etc will be served. Any
donations of cakes will be gratefully received on the day at Oaklea (am
preferably). There is no charge for this event but to gauge likely attendance
for catering purposes please contact Gordon, Myra or the website and also let us
know if you will be bringing a cake.
A quiz with all of the questions about Oaklea, for all the family to take part
in is being organised as part of the afternoon’s activities. It would be great
to see as many residents as possible take part whilst exploring this interesting
garden which featured recently in the Channel 4 series ‘Genius of Britain’,
being the former home of Mary’s brother, Professor William Hamilton, an eminent
Evolutionary Biologist. An information pamphlet on Bill produced by the Shoreham
& District Historical Society, together with some of their other publications,
will be on sale.
Children are especially welcome to come and explore this large garden which
includes a tree house, swings, tennis court (please bring own racquets and
balls) and croquet lawn. As the field behind Oaklea has just been cut, it is
available for parking as space near the house is limited. Better still for those
living closer, please walk if you are able.
BARN DANCE
Our recent Barn Dance attracted 41 people who thoroughly enjoyed dancing to the
music of the Hatted Hens. Another Barn Dance has been suggested for next Spring.
BONFIRES & NOISE NUISANCE
Now that summer is here, we make the usual request about trying not to cause a
nuisance to your neighbours by having smoky bonfires, allowing dogs to bark all
day or playing loud music in the garden. Your neighbours are entitled to enjoy
their homes and gardens just as much as you are entitled to enjoy yours without
nuisance from them.
TOTS & TODDLERS GROUP
A new Tots and Toddlers play group has recently started in the Memorial Hall on
Monday mornings between 10.15 am and 12 noon. If you are interested in taking
your child, please contact Kerry Richardson on 0797 3853675 for further
information or just go along and join in the fun (but not on 5th, 19th and 26th
July)! It is intended to run through the summer holiday, when older siblings
will also be welcome.
*UPDATE* - Due to very low numbers attending, the Tots and Toddlers
Group has closed.
PACT MEETING
Several
Badgers Mount residents attended the recent PACT meeting in Well Hill and
amongst other matters, were advised of the presence of the highly invasive
Japanese Knotweed in Well Hill. This weed grows up to 3m high with hollow
stems similar to bamboo, spreads rapidly – one plant can spread to the area of a
tennis court in one year – and is extremely difficult to eradicate once
established. It can damage paving and tarmac, and sometimes even structural
damage to buildings. It was recently reported that some mortgage lenders have
refused mortgages where Japanese Knotweed is present in the garden. Gardeners
were advised to keep a look out for this in their locality and seek expert
advice on its removal. When disposing of any, it is classed as controlled waste
and must be handled and transported in accordance with regulations.
POLICE SURGERIES
The next police surgeries will be on Thursdays 8th July and 2nd September from
11.00 am to 12.00 noon in the Memorial Hall during the Coffee Morning. PCSO Jane
Wright will be pleased to discuss and give advice about any concerns you have
about crimes, suspicious vehicles and callers etc.
