PCSOs* work alongside the police in a supporting role, providing a visible presence and helping to reassure the public. They patrol their local area, providing assistance and dealing with incidents of nuisance and anti-social behaviour which don't require full police powers.
By dealing with minor incidents PCSOs enable police to make more effective use of their time.

Latest BM NHW Newsletter

Hello to all the residents of Badgers Mount and a warm welcome to all the new members who have moved into the area.

For the last five newsletters, we have reported that crime in Badgers Mount is in decline. We are pleased to say the trend is continuing. We still, however, remain the target for the opportunist criminal (this is due largely to the nature of our location). However, most attempts to either burgle houses or break into sheds and garages have been unsuccessful. This does not distract from the distress it causes to the would be victims and we should all continue to be vigilant and watch out for our neighbours and their properties.

Vehicle Crime
As we are all aware, it is becoming more and more difficult for thieves to actually steal a car without the keys. Therefore, to deter the would be thief, do not have your car keys in view in the home and, where possible, put the car in the garage.

Theft from cars is that nuisance of having to get windows replaced because the opportunist thief has spotted something nice, perhaps a handbag, laptop or satellite navigation system, that is too irresistible for him to dismiss. Please take them with you or put them out of sight – all common sense.

Thefts from Garden Sheds and Garages
It is that time of year when the lawn mowers etc are about to start up and the usual travelling entrepreneurs are looking to equip their business with your trusty expensive garden tools. Please lock your sheds and garages, take serial numbers etc of motorised equipment and, where possible, chain them down.

House Burglaries
We have had a couple and we have also had some attempted burglaries. House alarms have improved to the extent that, to actually break in without triggering the alarm, is very difficult which means the burglar has to find a legitimate reason to be invited into your home!

Please dismiss all salesmen cold calling without a prior appointment and watch out for the distraction burglar, whereby one individual will find a reason to distract you from an open door, whilst his accomplice slips in to steal any valuables in sight.

Discount on Insurance
Did you know that if you belong to an accredited Neighbourhood Watch scheme like ours and /or you have an alarm which is regularly serviced and is NACOSS sanctioned, you get a discount on your house insurance? This can amount to quite a bit of money. It is also wise to set your alarm at night. Who wants to wake up thinking there is someone in the house when all are in bed? Alarms can have night settings easily zoned in, so that nightly trips to the fridge or bathroom do not set them off.

E-Mail Scams
Residents should be ever watchful for e-mails purporting to originate from the security departments of banks and building societies. These e-mails look genuine, usually having the organisation’s logo and trade marks.

If the e-mail asks for personal data (address, account number, PIN, etc) – DO NOT REPLY, as these e-mails are from criminals who are looking to access your account. Remember, your banks will NEVER ask for your PIN.

Annual General Meeting
The AGM will take place in the Memorial Hall on Thursday, 17th April, 2008 at 8.00 pm.

The Watch can only be effective with your support. There are approximately 245 dwellings in Badgers Mount. Without your input and support, the 12 co-ordinators cannot possibly do justice to their volunteer role, so please come along, enjoy a glass of wine, meet the neighbours and the Watch Committee. Together, we can ensure crime in Badgers Mount does not pay.
